"It used to be a tree house": The Harder Surfmax in modernized change

The popular beach bar "Surfmax" on the Harder See shore is currently undergoing extensive modernization. In an interview with VOL.AT, operator Stefan Köb reveals the innovations and challenges that accompany the renovation - and why the familiar charm is retained despite the extensive modernization.
The popular Surfmax, known as a meeting place for families, locals and water sports enthusiasts, is currently being renovated from top to bottom.
The original plan was to reopen the facility at Easter. However, due to unexpected challenges, this date has been delayed somewhat.

A reconstruction of this scale also brings with it technical hurdles. The modernization of the wastewater infrastructure in particular presented the team with major challenges. "As part of the new construction, the wastewater will be rerouted and transported via pumps - for this, pipes even have to be fixed to the lake bed, which requires the use of divers," explains Köb.

There were also obstacles in the way of the electricity supply. The weak power line was not sufficient, which is why a sustainable concept with photovoltaics and battery storage was chosen to cover the electricity demand.
The entire operation is undergoing a fundamental overhaul. "It used to be a sort of 'tree hut', but now everything is run professionally in accordance with current regulations," reports Köb. The innovations include:

- Sanitary facilities: A modern toilet is now available to guests.
- Self-service concepts: A vending machine area enables flexible supply – even outside regular opening hours.
- Self-service gastronomy: The down-to-earth gastronomy will be retained and expanded in parallel.
- Sporty focus: The well-known sporty character of the Surfmax is retained and further enhanced.

Despite all the innovations, Köb emphasizes: "Surfmax remains Surfmax," thereby underlining that the concept of the well-known beach bar - specifically aimed at families and locals - will remain intact. The concrete measures also include an expansion of the seating options.
“I hope that the Surfmax will continue to operate as before – just with an improved infrastructure that will benefit both our guests and employees,” adds Köb.

"We're aiming for the end of April," says Köb - depending on the spring weather and the condition of the terrain. A muddy surface would spoil the impression anyway, which is why they are pleased about timely progress.
Visitors can therefore look forward to a modernized offering that focuses on both the fun of water sports and a cozy get-together.
